THS compensation consultation – your views

Written by Jessica Bomford, January 14, 2026

Thank you to everyone who took part in our survey about the government’s proposed changes to the Infected Blood Compensation Scheme.

The government has set out some changes to the scheme, following additional recommendations from the Infected Blood Inquiry in July 2025 and has asked individuals to respond to its survey, which is here, by 22 January. As part of compiling our submission to government on this issue we wanted to ask our members some slightly different questions to ensure that this documents reflects the views of our membership.

The survey was emailed to 2,088 THS members who’ve asked to be contacted on issues around infected blood and we received responses from 248 people.

The full results of the survey are here. Some questions asked people to share personal experiences and we are very grateful to everyone who took the time to do so. We will share the report in full with all comments in our submission to the government. We have taken out these comments in this online version to protect the identity of people who responded. All views have been read and noted and will form an important part of our submission.

There was strong agreement that there should be more recognition of the impact of interferon treatment for hepatitis C and support that people who suffered significant harm to their mental health should receive an additional award. Opinion was divided about how the latter should be evidenced, with many respondents emphasising the retraumatising impact of having to prove psychological damage. There was also support for affected people (parents, children and siblings) receiving recognition for psychological harm through the ‘supplementary route’.

While almost all respondents agreed that the proposed award of £10,000 for unethical research (£15,000 for pupils of Treloars) was not sufficient, suggestions for an appropriate amount ranged from £20,000 to £1 million per person treated with blood products.

The headline results of the survey were shared at a THS webinar on 8 January. The Powerpoint presentation used at that webinar is here.

Our views on the government’s proposed changes to the compensation scheme will be submitted by 22 January, when the consultation ends. We expect government to respond to the community’s views within 12 weeks and any changes resulting from the consultation process could be laid before Parliament before the summer recess in July.
