From my family to yours. Why we’ve chosen to sponsor Family Camp in memory of Richard.

Written by Sam Wilson, April 3, 2026

Despite no family history Phil and I had three boys, all with severe haemophilia. Richard, our eldest, was diagnosed at seven months after severe brain bleeds and two major brain operations. His consequent disabilities meant he wasn’t able to join activity holidays run by the Haemophilia Society but his brothers thoroughly enjoyed them, learning new skills and increasing their confidence. Trips away with other boys, safely supported by specialists, created the space to stretch themselves and to try activities they wouldn’t have had access to otherwise.  As parents we found the support of the Haemophilia Society and other parents a great help in learning how to make life better for the boys.

Richard acquired HIV and died of another brain bleed when he was just eight years old. His inhibitors to FVIII meant he spent many months in hospital and suffered a great deal.  It was a tough time, especially with the added difficulties HIV created then.

We have now received interim compensation from the Government for Richard. It is good to have personal and tangible recognition for the harm which was done to him, but strange to have money to spend when he can’t benefit.  We would like to use some of it to help other families in the ways which helped us back in the 1980s and 90s.  The family agreed that sponsoring an event to do that would be an appropriate way to honour Richard’s precious memory.

We’re unbelievably grateful to the Buggins family for their generous donation to help us put on our new Family Camp this year. Find out more about the event here.
