New inquiry minister ‘actively seeking’ way forward

Written by Aaron Dennis, May 27, 2020

Penny Mordaunt, the minister responsible for the Infected Blood Inquiry, has written to The Haemophilia Society to state her “personal commitment” to the inquiry.

The letter said she was actively seeking ways in which to move forward, following a meeting in January between her predecessor, Oliver Dowden, health minister Nadine Dorries and campaigners. Frustration has been growing that no action or communication of any kind has resulted from the meeting.

Earlier this month Clive Smith, chair of The Society who also attended the meeting, wrote to Ms Mordaunt urging her to take action immediately to improve the lives of those infected and affected.

This included providing better mental and financial support.

In her letter, Ms Mordaunt said she hoped to attend the inquiry once public hearings resume and insisted the inquiry continued to be “a priority” for the Government.

The Society awaits a detailed response to the points raised in Clive’s letter to Ms Mordaunt on 6 May.
