Conan McIlwrath

Trustee

Conan, from Northern Ireland has Severe Haemophilia A. He was born in the early 80’s and sadly came into contact with contaminated blood (Hep C), however is now clear of the Virus. Conan has osteoarthritis in both ankles and from these experiences carries a vast knowledge of how it is to live and manage haemophilia, along with the complications which can accompany it.

He is father to a 10 year old son who obviously has no haemophilia related issues but is a special little boy who is interested in the condition and helps a lot when daddy is sore. He is in a happy relationship with his partner and her little girl and enjoys family life mixed with some socialising and down time. Interests include Cars, Boats, Caravanning and traveling.

Professionally, he is from an engineering background and has held management positions in the Northern Ireland water industry since 2002. This is still a government owned, regulated industry and his roles have provided experience in; Project/energy management, strategy and policy including H&S and risk methodology, managing resources and budgets, implementing change, staff management, data analysis and briefing/presenting to senior management.

His history with the Haemophilia society has been since a small child, both his parents were heavily involved with the Local group in NI. He has many fond memories of attending conferences, AGM’s, local family days and holidaying in society caravans around the country.

For the above he always wanted to give something back, however within Northern Ireland of late the opportunities have been less although he did manage a brief local group stint in the early 2000’s. He currently sits on a non-affiliated group of patients and sufferers in NI which main goal is to support each other and lobby for each other for the duration of the Infected Blood Enquiry.

Conan wants to:

  • Give something back.
  • Rebuild the bridge and give Northern Ireland a voice in the UK based charity.
  • Help and support with anything that will help put the society on the map.
  • Last but not least have some fun and meet some great people.
