The Haemophilia and Bleeding Disorders Alliance
Written by Sam Wilson, October 30, 2024
The Haemophilia and Bleeding Disorders Alliance (HBDA) is a new organisation which brings together support groups and clinical experts to promote the best care and treatment for people living with a bleeding disorder.
The group has been formed to help ensure that the Infected Blood Inquiry’s recommendations relating to the safe treatment and care of people with bleeding disorders are implemented. The Infected Blood Inquiry spent six years examining the causes of the contaminated blood scandal of the 1970s and 80s and made its final recommendations in May 2024.
Co-chaired by Kate Burt, Chief Executive of the Haemophilia Society and Professor Pratima Chowdary, Chair of the UK Haemophilia Doctors’ Organisation UKHCDO the HBDA member organisations are: the Haemophilia Society, Haemophilia NI, Haemophilia Scotland, Haemophilia Wales, the UKHCDO, the Haemophilia Nurses’ Association (HNA-UK) , the Haemophilia Chartered Physiotherapists Association (HCPA), specialist social workers and psychologists.
The group’s initial primary aim is to advocate for the timely implementation of all the inquiry’s recommendations, in keeping with the principle of giving patients a voice.
The new alliance aims to support the delivery of positive change and improved clinical outcomes for individuals and the wider bleeding disorders community. It will meet regularly to monitor progress and seek information as needed and share updates.
