Returning to the UK to settle
As a UK citizen returning home, you can use the National Health Service (NHS) just like before!
Here’s what you’ll need to do to get access to a GP (General Practitioner) and NHS care:
- Register with a GP surgery: This is your first step to accessing NHS services. Find a practice close to your new home and enquire about registering. You can usually complete a GMS1 form online or in person.
- Proof of Eligibility: You might be asked to show documentation proving your eligibility for NHS services while registering. Your UK passport is the primary proof, but you may also be asked to provide evidence of your previous residence in the UK (employment records, utility bills, etc.).
- NHS Number: It might still be valid if you had an NHS number before leaving. The GP surgery can help you check and retrieve it if needed.
Additional points to remember:
- National Insurance contributions or property ownership don’t affect your NHS entitlement.
- If you don’t have a permanent address yet, you can register as a temporary patient for up to three months.
- If you have ongoing medical conditions and take regular medications, bring enough supplies until you register with a GP. If needed, consider bringing translated copies of your medical records.
