Ethan’s story
My name is Ethan and I am 19 years old. I was born with severe Haemophilia a, but I haven’t let that stop me in life. In my spare time I love to go out road cycling and keeping fit, in the past I have competed at national levels through hard work and determination.
With all competitive sports there of course their risks, but from keeping up with my prophylaxis I have stayed relatively pain free when I’ve unfortunately crashed! I have been incredibly lucky in my life, despite having severe a I am able to count on one hand the amount of times that I have had spontaneous bleed, along with this I have only briefly had inhibitors when I was younger.
However last year I suffered painful internal bleeding from a stomach ulcer, my haemophilia only made the matter worse and I spent a week in hospital as a result. I have always had a passion for science and with having haemophilia I was inspired to enrol at Sheffield Hallam University to study Biomedical science to further develop my knowledge, and its been great to see how often haemophilia comes up in my modules!
