MOT due dates extended by six months

MOT due dates for cars, motorcycles and light vans are to be extended by six months.

The Department of Transport has announced that the extension will come into effect from 30 March 2020 and is being done to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

You do not need to do anything to extend your vehicle’s MOT expiry date if it’s on or after 30 March 2020. This will be done automatically. However, your vehicle must be safe to drive.

If your MOT will run out before 30 March, the Department of Transport says it has worked with the police and insurers so that people who cannot get their MOT done because they are self-isolating are not unfairly penalised. You will need to get your MOT certificate when you are safely able to do so.

If you are not self-isolating and your MOT runs out before 30 March, you will need to book your vehicle in for an MOT test. The Government is allowing MOT centres and garages to remain open.
