Emergency Displacement Fund and Information

It is with great distress that we witness the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

So today, we have launched an emergency appeal that will help to provide crucial support to those in need during this time of conflict. All money that we raise will go directly to the European Haemophilia Consortium’s (EHC) short-term Emergency Displacement Fund.

The EHC’s Emergency Displacement Fund (EDF) will support National Member Organisations (NMOs) who are dealing with the direct displacement of people with a bleeding disorder and their families in situations of armed conflict.

Members of the UK Haemophilia Society team have family and friends who are fleeing across borders from Ukraine and in other countries supporting refugees in Eastern Europe. We are aware that money is what is needed most, especially for people who require specific health treatments. What displaced people with a bleeding disorder most need is the means to travel to hospitals once they have crossed the Ukrainian border. All money that we raise will go directly to the EHC’s EDF.

What can the funding be used for?

The funding is intended to help organisations supply critical items for displaced people with bleeding disorders entering their country and coming under their care, for example, but not limited to:

  • Travel to a town/city with a haemophilia centre
  • Initial accommodation if required (for maximum 14 days) while receiving bleeding disorder care
  • Provision for communications with treatment centres (e.g. call charges, calling cards, power banks, etc.)
  • Non-prescription medicines (excluding factor or non-factor concentrates)
  • Medical equipment (e.g., feminine hygiene products, crutches, mobility aids)
  • Provision of psychosocial support for families
  • Additional support deemed necessary by the NMO can be applied for with a justification

People with a bleeding disorder are rare. Often invisible, they can easily fall through the cracks of an overwhelmed system in times of emergency and crisis. But these people are members of our community, they are our extended family, and we are here to help and support them.
